The Avon Lakers saw their 2020 season come to an end with a 13-7 loss to the #3 seed out of Region 3, the Union Hill Bulldogs. The Lakers twice had leads in the first 4 innings but were unable to kieep up with a Bulldogs lineup that collected 18 hits in the ball game.
Avon starter Matt Pichelmann gave up an infield single and hit a batter to give Union Hill an early scoring chance bu then a line drive to shortstop Caleb Curry turned into a double play and another bouncer to Curry ended the inning.
In the bottom of hte 1st, Matt Meyer and Bjorn Hanson collected back-to-back oppostie field singles off Bulldogs starter Conrad Masberg. Caleb Currysent a fly ball deep enough into right to allow Meyer to tag and advance to 3rd eith 1 out. Hanson then stole 2nd, but Masberg fanned both Taylor Holthaus and Riley Voit to strand ment at 2nd and 3rd.
Union Hill got on the board in the top of the 2nd against Pichelmann and the Lakers. Adam Giesen led off with a single, followed by a double from Jack Becker. Pichelmann then struck out Dan Beckius for the first out but Jacob Becker doubled to drive in 2. Derek Masber then doubled as well to drive in the 3rd run of the inning. Joe Becker was then hit by a pitch. Nathan Berg then laced the Bulldogs 4th double of the inning but the Lakers relay of Will Kleinschmidt to Caleb Curry to Carter Holtahus was in time to get a runner thrown out at homefor the 2nd out. A ground out to 2nd ended the inning with Union Hill leading 3-0.
The Lakers responded quickly in the bottom of the 2nd. Cole Fuecker flew out to right to lead off, but then Josh Becker walked. After Will Kleinschmidt went down swinging for out #2, Carter Holthaus walked, as did Matt Meyer the bases were loaded with 2 outs. Bjorn Hanson then walked as well, forcing in Josh Becker to make it 3-1. A wild pitch brought in Carter Holthaus to make it 3-2 and then Caleb Curry ripped a 2-run double down the left field line to score both Meyer and Hanson to give Avon a 4-3 lead. Masberg then fanned Taylor Holthaus to end the 2nd with Avon leading 4-3.
Matt Pichelmann got Nate Lee to pop out to 2nd baseman Riley Voit to start the top of the 3rdbut the Bulldogs then got consecutive singles from Adam GIesen and Jack Becker. Dan Beckius went down on strikes for the 2nd out, but the Bulldogs got an rbi single from Jacob Becker to tie the game and then a wild pitch brought in Jack Becker to put Union Hill back in front 5-4. After an error, the Lakers made the decision to bring in Will Kelinschmidt to pitch. He got a pop out to Riley Voit to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 4th, the lead would change hands again. Matt Meyer led off with a single with Bjorn Hanson following with a walk. Another walk to Caleb Curry filled the bases with no outs. Taylor Hothaus went down looking fo rthe first out but then a single by Riley Voit brought in Matt Meyer to tie the game at 5-5. Cole Fuecker's sacrifice fly to center brought in Bjorn Hanson to put the Lakers back in front 6-5. Josh Becker flew out to right to end the inning.
In the top of the 5th, Adam Giesen led off with a single, and an error allowed Jack Becker to reach and give the Bulldogs two men on base with no outs. A sacrifice bunt put 2 men in scoring position with 1 out. A fielders choice brought in the tying run and an rbi single by Derek Masberg gave Union Hill a 7-6 lead as Kleinschmidt got the final out of the inning on a fly ball to Taylor Holthaus in center field.
The Lakers then put together a scoring threat in the bottom of the 5th with a 1-out single by Carter Holthaus, a single by Matt Meyer and a 2-out hit-batter by Caleb Curry. Taylor Holthaus came up and laced a line drive to shortstop to end the scoring chance and Union Hill held a 7-6 lead after 5 innings.
In the top of the 6th, the Bulldogs added to their lead. After Will Kleinschmidt got Nathan Berg to fly out to right, Conrad Masberg and Nate Lee singled and Adam Giesen walked to load the bases. Jack Becker's fly ball was dropped in right, allowing a run to score and when Kleinschmidt hit Dan Beckius with a pitch it forced in another run, making it 9-6. Avon then brought in their draftee from Upsala, Matt Swanson. Swanson got a strikeout and a ground ball to 3rd baseman Matt Meyer to end the inning.
The Lakers got a lead-off single from Riley Voit in the bottom of the 6thbut Cole Fuecker, Josh Becker and Will Kleinschmidt all grounded out to strand Voit at 2nd.
In the top of the 7th, Union Hill got another run when they loaded the bases on 2 hits and a hit batter, then a sacrifice fly by Adam Giesen brought home a run before Swanson registered a strikeout to end the ining with Union Hill's lead growing to 10-6.
In the bottom of the 7th, Matt Meyer's 1-out single, his 4th hit of the game was followed by a 2-out single by Caleb Curry. Taylor Holthaus got jammed ansd rolled a ball in front of home plate where he was thrown out by catcher Nate Lee to end the inning.
In the top of the 8th, Dan Beckius was hit by a pitch, followed by a Jacob Becker single. Matt Swanson got Dusty Steinhoff to hit into a 4-6-3 double play, leaving a man on 3rd with 2 outs. Pinch-hitter Matt Collins got hit by pitch to put runners at the corners, bringing up Nathan Berg. Berg smashed a 3-run Homer to make it 13-6 heading to the last of the 8th.
In the bottom of the 8th, Riley Voit's 3rd hit of the game was a lead-off double. After a wild pitch moved Riley to 3rd, Cole Fuecker singled to drive in Voit and make it 13-7. But that was it for the Lakers as Josh Becker grounded out, Will Kleinschmidt flew out and Carter Holthaus went down on stirkes.
Putter Harlander took over pitching duties for Avon in the top of the 9th. He got a ground out to short before back-to-back errors allowed 2 runners on base. But then Harlander got Dan Beckius and Jacob Becker to fly out to Taylor Holthaus in center to end the 9th wiith Union Hill still up 13-7.
Down to their final 3 outs, Matt Meyer went down on strikes, followed by a double by Bjorn Hanson. Caleb Curry flew out to center and the game ended on a Taylor Holthaus strikeout.
